Chesterfield
Discover Chesterfield
Chesterfield is perhaps best known for the distinctive Crooked Spire that sits above the town’s parish church. Rising 228 foot-high and leaning over nine feet from its true centre, there are many legends about this twisted landmark – was the Devil responsible, or simply distorted wooden beams? Either way, the base of the spire is a great place to enjoy views across the town and beyond.
Home to one of the largest open-air markets in England (currently undergoing a multi-million pound transformation), Chesterfield hosts a regular roster of events from farmers’ to artisanal markets in its cobbled Market Place. There are independent shops dotted in the medieval streets beyond this (known as the Shambles), as well as restaurants and pubs. Other highlights here include Chesterfield Museum and Art Gallery, which charts the town’s past, and the Winding Wheel and Pomegranate theatres – home to live music, drama, comedy and more.
Chesterfield Museum and Art Gallery and the Pomegranate theatre are temporarily closed for renovation.
