Turning Norfolk Square into a playground of creativity

Derbyshire Makes took over Norfolk Square and surrounding cafes, shops and Partington Theatre to create a playground in the centre of Glossop. Children were entranced by Creeping Toad’s magical lost stories and making colourful pop-up cards, as well as creating swift puppets with Deb Pitman before joining in with The Cat and The Swift puppet show.

Visitors created road signs on textiles for Dare to Dream and shared their nature stories in MAKE Room.

Everyone dug deep on the Makory to uncover archeological finds with Tim Campbell-Green, basked in the wonderful sound tapestry created by Clare Savory and travelled back in time with Gruesome Glossop Film Cuts in the historic surroundings of Partington Theatre, while others entered an alternative virtual world in the square.

A local group worked with singer, songwriter Matt Hill to create a new song performed on stage by Matt:

HUGGED BY THE HILLS

(a song for Glossop)

Written by Martin, Jackie, Peter, Jen, Sheila, Ann, Norma, Lanice, Laura and Matt.

VERSE ONE

We're trailblazers, mud treaders too

Retail ramblers, after a bargain or two

VERSE TWO

We'll talk your socks off, we're friendly smilers too

We're saddle straddlers, we're the people snaking through

BRIDGE

I can still smell the smoke and see the blue green snow

I can still remember the rainbow river's flow, the rainbow river's flow

CHORUS

Hugged by the hills, hugged by the hills

Hugged by the hills, in these arms I belong

VERSE THREE

We love Dinting Arches, all the flowers in Norfolk Square

We love the moorlands and all the trails that lead us there

BRIDGE

CHORUS X2

END - We're trailblazers...

NOTES

Written on 15th April 2025 in 90 members by members of the Derbyshire Carers Support group in Glossop. We dedicated this song to all our fellow Glossop gladiators, the beat beat beat, sound of feet, the ragged runners, nail polishers, face makers, would-be divas, pothole dodgers, cat wailers, pedal pushers, dog walkers, harvest gatherers, gear grinders, cake scoffers and pavement strollers.

Songwriting session facilitated by Matt Hill.

Programmed by High Peak Community Arts
