Community-made patchwork

Come and discover 95 mini fabric banners, each the size of a historic Gob Brick, come together in this stunning community quilt celebrating creativity, unity, and local heritage.

Inspired by Joseph Wilkes’ revolutionary brick design, the quilt honours how craftsmanship has helped build our community, one patch (or brick!) at a time.

Created by schools, groups, and individuals across South Derbyshire, each patch shares a personal hope or dream for the future – stitched together by Church Gresley Sewing Group into a vibrant example of crafting.

Come and find your patches within the quilt or just take a moment to appreciate the voices of our local community.

Did you know?

In response to the 1784 Brick Tax, Joseph Wilkes of Overseal, Derbyshire, invented Gob Bricks-larger than standard bricks to reduce costs and speed up construction. This clever design helped builders use fewer bricks and pay less tax, making them popular during the Industrial Revolution!
